Tebow considering running for Congress

With his football career seemingly at a dead end, but with his television career off to a promising start as an ESPN network analyst, Tim Tebow is reportedly considering running for Congress.  An opening has developed in Florida’s fourth Congressional district in which he lives.  Ander Crenshaw, 71, unexpectedly announced his decision to retire from a seat that is solidly Republican.  As reported by the Washington Examiner, Tebow, 28, is considered an ideal candidate for the GOP: evangelical Christian, with a squeaky-clean image and an engaging personality.  He appears to be a moderate Republican, somewhat akin to Paul Ryan, committed to battling poverty with creative solutions emphasizing privatization in lieu of direct government administration.

USC has a long-snapper who is blind

The Southern California Trojans had a blind player snapping the ball during their spring football game at the Coliseum on Saturday.  Jake Olson, who lost his eyesight at 12, was greeted by a standing ovation.   “When I first ran out there and the crowd cheered,” he said, “I had to fight back tears.”  The 19-year-old was perfect with his two field-goal snaps.  It was enough to give him hope of playing in a game that counts.  He said he’s “getting better, bigger and stronger” and will try out for the team this fall “and show the coaches I’m more than capable of being a long snapper.”  USC coach Clay Helton was impressed by Olson’s performance while under media scrutiny: “To hit two dead on the money, how special a kid is he?”

Meyer slams Cardale’s schoolwork

Urban Meyer, head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, said his soon-to-be NFL quarterback, Cardale Jones, “wasn’t necessarily good at school.”  No shock there, as Jones famously tweeted as a freshman that football players “ain’t come to play school.”  Still, some observers, including ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, wondered if Meyer’s comment will have a negative impact on the draft prospects of Jones, who will be expected to spend long hours studying his playbook and game film.  Jones probably would have been a first-round pick if he had opted for the draft last spring, as he considered doing.  But he stayed in school and had a disappointing football season, probably due in part to his offensive coordinator, Tom Herman, leaving to be head coach of the Houston Cougars.

Faldo: Spieth may have ‘nightmares’ of Masters collapse

Nick Faldo, who has won six majors on the pro golf tour, said in won’t be easy for Jordan Spieth to shrug off his Masters debacle.  “What happened to Jordan, it was so sudden, just bam,” Faldo said.  “Certainly having a five-shot lead and collapsing, he’s going to have maybe some nightmares about that.”

Kobe won’t sign Young’s shoes, throws them away

After his sensational farewell game, in which he scored 60 points, LA Lakers future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant signed autographs for fans and teammates.  But he refused to autograph Nick Young’s shoes, presumably because the Mamba is a Nike endorser and Young, 30-year-old swingman, wears Adidas.  In fact, Bryant threw the Adidas in the trash.  “I was a little disappointed in that,” Young said. “But he could not end without something like that.  . . . Yeah, that’s Kobe for you.”
